※課程簡介 與 學習目標：
對於英語學習者，無論是否計畫到英國留學，瞭解英國文學是有其必要性的，本課程即在幫助學生認識英國文學的歷史背景，並藉由閱讀幾位重要作家的文學作品來接觸英國文化。
這學期我們將研讀二十世紀的英國文學作品，為了讓同學能更快進入英國文學，我們將著重在最容易理解的短篇故事作品，課堂中不僅會帶領大家閱讀幾位作家的作品，也會介紹相關的歷史背景和作家生平。二十世紀充滿政治與思想的變遷，在歐洲經歷兩次世界大戰之後，興起了呼籲在藝術和文學上進行改革的新運動，這個新興的現代主義運動也影響了英國的一些作家，我們將介紹Virginia Woolf和James Joyce這兩個代表作家。而在第二次世界大戰之後，許多英國殖民地開始獨立，導致了大英帝國的瓦解。然而，之後興起的後殖民主義反而豐富了英國文學的發展，來自前殖民地的不同聲音加入了廣義的英國文學行列。因此，我們會有來自於迦勒比海地區的Jean Rhys和Caryl Philips、來自於南非的Nadine Gordimer和來自於印度的Kiran Desai，希望透過閱讀這些文學作品，學生能欣賞豐富且多樣的英國文學。
Course Objective: For English learners, whether going to the UK for further study or not, it is truly essential to understand English literature. This course is designed to help students grasp the historical background of English literature and learn British culture by reading some literary works.
Course Description: In this semester, we will study the English literature of the 20th century. In order that students can have easy access to English literature, we will focus on short stories. Not only will we read some authors’ literary works, but we will also take a brief look into the historical and biographical background of these authors. The 20th century is full of both political and ideological change. After the whole Europe experienced two world wars, a new movement came up to call for a revolution in arts and literature. The burgeoning modernism movement also influenced some writers in the U.K. We’ll introduce Virginia Woolf and James Joyce as two representatives of this trend. After World War II, many of British colonies became independent, which led to the collapse of the British Empire. However, the postcolonialism concepts arising afterwards enriched the development of English literature. More different voices from the previous colonies joined the English literature in a broad context. Thus, we’ll have Jean Rhys and Caryl Philips from the Caribbean area, Nadine Gordimer from South Africa, and Kiran Desai from India. We hope students can appreciate the rich diversity of English literature through reading the assigned literary works. Students taking this course will be expected to make an oral report on an author’s biography and submit a final paper on one or two essay questions for the stories.

詹姆斯·喬伊斯，是愛爾蘭作家、詩人，二十世紀偉大的作家之一，后現代文學的奠基者之一，其作品及「意識流」思想對世界文壇影響巨大。此篇作品《阿拉比》英文寫得較淺白易懂，運用了意識流寫作技巧，文采一流。阿拉比市集被暗喻為愛情的浪漫及神秘。
